How to edit short-form content: a cut order that works in Premiere, Resolve or any editor
Seven steps in a fixed order: select, rough cut, reframe to vertical, tighten, caption, sound, export. The Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve feature each step uses, read from Adobe's and Blackmagic Design's own pages on 9 October 2026, including which Resolve tools are Studio only.
Short answer
Cut in this order: pick the moment, rough cut, reframe to vertical, tighten, caption, fix sound, export. Premiere has Auto Reframe and transcript captions. In DaVinci Resolve, Smart Reframe and text based editing are Studio features, not free ones.
On 9 October 2026, Google autocomplete finished "how to edit short form content" with DaVinci Resolve first, then Premiere Pro, then CapCut.
So this post is the order I would cut in, with the tool each step uses in the first two.
Two things went wrong while I was writing it.
First, Adobe's help pages at helpx.adobe.com returned Access Denied to every request I made on 9 October 2026. So every Premiere claim below comes from Adobe's own blog, dated, and menu names may differ in your build.
Second, the feature most people want from Resolve for vertical video is not in the free version. Blackmagic Design's Studio page, read 9 October 2026, lists Smart Reframe among Neural Engine tools "found exclusively in DaVinci Resolve Studio." Studio was listed at $295 on blackmagicdesign.com the same day.
That changes the order, not the result. Here it is.
Step 1: Select the moment before you open a timeline
Most bad clips die here, before a single cut.
Watch or read the whole source. Mark the one moment with a setup and a payoff. If you cannot say what the clip is about in a sentence, you have not found it yet.
In Premiere Pro, Text-Based Editing does the reading for you. Adobe's NAB 2023 post, read 9 October 2026, says it transcribes source media so you can "skim through transcripts, search for keywords, and add them to the Timeline."
In Resolve, check your version first. Blackmagic's overview lists text based editing among what Studio adds over the free version. On free, you scrub and mark in and out points the old way.
The old way works. It is slower.
Step 2: Rough cut long, in the source shape
Cut before you crop.
That sounds backwards when the clip is going vertical. But reframing a two-minute selection wastes work on seconds you will delete in Step 4. So lay the moment on a timeline at its original shape and cut it to roughly the right length.
Keep a little air at the start and end. You will want it when you tighten.
In Premiere, the same Adobe post describes building the rough cut by copying and pasting phrases in the sequence transcript, with the timeline changing to match. That is the fastest rough cut I know of for talking footage, and it only works when the speech is clear.
Step 3: Reframe to vertical once the cut is roughly right
Now the frame matters.
In Premiere, Auto Reframe is the tool. Adobe's blog post of 4 November 2019, read 9 October 2026, says it works on single clips as an effect or on whole sequences. You can adjust the sensitivity to how much motion is in the footage, then fix the result by editing its keyframes.
Check those keyframes. Automatic tracking follows movement, and the person moving is not always the person talking.
In Resolve, start with the timeline. Blackmagic's What's New page, read 9 October 2026, says square and vertical resolutions are now in the project and timeline settings, meant to be combined with Smart Reframe.
On the free version there is no Smart Reframe. You set the vertical timeline, scale the shot, and keyframe the position by hand on every speaker change. It takes longer, and you make every framing decision yourself, which is the part a reviewer notices.
Step 4: Tighten until nothing is waiting
This is the step that separates an edit from a crop.
Cut the breaths, the false starts, the "so, um, yeah." Cut the setup until it is one line. Cut on the beat where the next sentence starts, not after the pause that follows it.
Then watch it on a phone, muted, with no context. If any second feels like waiting, it goes.
I do not have a retention number to give you for this step, and I will not invent one. The test I use is simpler: would you swipe away here?
And it is the step that pays. Campaign work routed through VALORAE Cast pays per view, so the seconds you cut are the seconds viewers were leaving on.
Step 5: Caption after the cut is locked
Captions made before the final cut have to be retimed. So they come now.
Premiere builds them from the transcript you already have. Adobe's 2023 post says the finished transcript can be turned into captions once the edit is complete. A later Adobe post, of 2 April 2025, says captions can be translated automatically into 27 languages.
Resolve's edit page, read 9 October 2026, describes subtitle tracks you can create from scratch or import as SRT, styled in the inspector, then rendered into the video or exported as SRT or VTT files.
Whatever generates them, read every word. Automatic captions get names, numbers and brand terms wrong, and one wrong name on screen costs more trust than no captions at all.
For styling and timing, VALORAE Arc wrote up captions for short-form video: placement, words per beat, and the errors that cost you.
Step 6: Fix the sound last, but never skip it
People forgive soft video. They swipe on bad audio.
Level the voice so it sits clearly over any music. Duck the music under speech. If the source has room noise, clean it before you add anything on top.
Blackmagic's Studio page lists AI voice isolation and a dialogue separator among the Neural Engine tools in Studio. I could not read Adobe's help pages, so I will not name a Premiere audio feature here.
On music, use only what you are licensed to use or what the campaign hands you. A clip built on a track you are not cleared for can lose its sound after you post it.
Step 7: Export to the platform's spec, then check the brief
Instagram's reel size help page, read 9 October 2026, accepts aspect ratios between 1.91:1 and 9:16, asks for at least 30 frames per second and a minimum resolution of 720 pixels, and lists 48khz or 96khz as the audio sample rates.
The free Resolve covers that easily. Blackmagic says the free version handles up to Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 at up to 60fps.
Both editors can also post for you. Resolve's What's New page says you can link accounts and upload to YouTube, TikTok, Vimeo and X as you export. Adobe's October 2023 post announced TikTok posting in Premiere Pro (beta) and direct publishing to YouTube Shorts.
Before you post a campaign clip, run the five checks before you submit. A good edit on the wrong account still gets sent back.
Step 8: Pick the editor after you know the order
The order matters more than the software.
If you have no editor yet, our comparison of CapCut vs Premiere vs Resolve for clipping has the listed prices. I am making no CapCut feature claims here, because I could not check its feature pages for this post, and I will not describe a tool I cannot check.
If you cut podcasts, the same seven steps apply. The selection step is most of the job, which is why podcast clip editor jobs pay for judgement first.
This order is a habit, not a law. Break it when the footage asks you to.
The short version
- Pick the moment before you open a timeline.
- Rough cut in the original shape; cut before you crop.
- Reframe once you know which seconds survive, and check every keyframe.
- Tighten until no second feels like waiting.
- Caption after the cut is locked, then read every word.
- Fix the voice before you add music, and use only licensed tracks.
- Export to the platform's published spec and recheck the campaign brief.

Frequently asked questions
How do you edit short form content?
In a fixed order: select the moment, rough cut it, reframe to vertical, tighten, add captions, fix the sound, then export. Each step depends on the one before it, so captions come after the cut is locked and reframing comes after you know which seconds survive. Instagram's reel size help page, read 9 October 2026, accepts aspect ratios between 1.91:1 and 9:16.
How to edit short form content in DaVinci Resolve?
Set a vertical resolution in the project and timeline settings, which Blackmagic Design's What's New page, read 9 October 2026, says now offers square and vertical options. Smart Reframe is listed on the Studio page among features found only in DaVinci Resolve Studio, so on the free version you reframe by keyframing position by hand. Resolve's edit page describes subtitle tracks you can create from scratch or import as SRT, then render into the video or export as SRT or VTT files.
How to edit short form content in Premiere Pro?
Use Text-Based Editing to find the moment in the transcript, rough cut, then apply Auto Reframe. Adobe's blog post of 4 November 2019 says Auto Reframe works on single clips as an effect or on whole sequences, with a sensitivity setting and editable keyframes. Adobe's post of 13 April 2023 says the finished transcript can be used to generate captions. Adobe's help pages returned Access Denied when I tried them on 9 October 2026, so check menu names in your own version.
How to edit podcast clips?
Find the moment in the transcript, cut it down to one idea with a payoff, reframe on whoever is speaking, then caption and correct every name by hand. Premiere's Text-Based Editing searches transcripts for keywords, per Adobe's 13 April 2023 blog post. In DaVinci Resolve, Blackmagic's overview lists text based editing among what Studio adds over the free version.
How to edit clips for a paid clipping campaign?
Use the same seven steps, then read the campaign brief again before export. Campaign clips get sent back for stale footage, the wrong account, a missing tag, a reused edit, or a view count the platform disagrees with, and all five can be checked before you submit.
