Starting from nothing as an editor or clipper
No portfolio, no client, no campaign history. What to build first, what you must never pay for, and what changes when you are doing this from India.

Start by making work nobody asked for. Cut three to five spec pieces from real footage to a brief you write yourself, label every one of them as spec, and lead with a reel of 60 to 90 seconds; that is a portfolio a working editor will respect and you can start it tonight. Never pay for access to campaigns, because legitimate clipping pays you, and a paid tier can only honestly sell time and attention. If you are in India the platforms are open to you, and what changes is downstream: the payout rail, the currency, the paperwork, and an age gate enforced at payout rather than at signup.
The first instinct is always the free edit for a stranger who just wants to see one, and it is the most expensive decision anyone makes in this trade. Spec work does the same job honestly: you pick the footage, you write the brief, you own the result, and you label it spec everywhere it appears. Passing spec off as commissioned is the one version that ends the relationship on the day somebody checks, and people check more often than beginners expect.
