Finding clients as a video editor

The three channels that produce a first client, what each platform expects from a first message, and why fifty researched prospects beat five hundred.

Short answer

A first client comes from one of three channels, worked in this order: a referral from someone who already pays for editing, cold outreach naming one specific weakness in something the prospect published, and marketplace or campaign work that buys you dated proof. The first has a budget already allocated and the third has none, which is why the order matters more than the effort. The platform changes the opening and not the message: Discord holds the briefs and bans hardest, Instagram lets the work argue while the DM asks, LinkedIn is where a business budget replies, Telegram is fast and thin.

Research beats volume, and it is not close. Five hundred copy-pasted DMs get you a block list and a reputation in servers that talk to each other; fifty messages that each name one fixable thing in something the prospect published last week get you replies. That is more work per message and considerably less work overall. The part people skip is that the channel changes the opening line and not the pitch, so write the message once and adapt only the first sentence to wherever you are sending it. VALORAE Cast posts paid editing and clipping work to members for the same reason this page exists: for most editors the hard part was never the editing.
