Under 18 and clipping: what the terms say

If you are under 18 and clipping for pay, the creator terms on the major campaign platforms say you should not be there. The condition is 18 or over. Accounts belonging to minors are banned, and the terms say amounts can be withheld. In India there is a second layer: under Section 11 of the Indian Contract Act a minor's agreement is void from the start, so the money a client or platform "owes" you is not something you can enforce. The clean routes are a parent or guardian holding the contract, or waiting and building the reel. Here is what each of those means.

What the terms say about under 18 and clipping

The line itself is short. You must be 18 or over to use the platform. Accounts found to belong to minors are banned, and any amounts on them may be withheld.

Two mechanisms make that bite harder than it reads.

First, review. Every submission gets a bot score and a human decides. The terms do not say at which step age gets checked, and that is the point. Whether it surfaces at sign-up, in review, or when you try to withdraw, they are written so the platform does not have to pay the balance.

Second, timing. CPM campaigns run a seven-day earning window after approval, then a three-day hold, so roughly ten days between approval and money. Unsettled amounts reverse if a clip is rejected after approval or a flag is upheld. A minor's balance is unsettled for that whole window, every single time. There is one appeal, inside ten business days, and disputes after that go to binding arbitration, which is not a process a sixteen-year-old is going to run.

Why Indian law does not rescue you

People assume the law protects minors here. It does, in a way that helps nobody in this situation.

Section 11 of the Indian Contract Act says a minor is not competent to contract. The case that settled what that means is Mohori Bibee v Dharmodas Ghose: a minor's agreement is void from the beginning. Not voidable. Not "enforceable against the adult only". Void. There is no contract to stand on.

That cuts both ways. A client cannot enforce a deadline against you. You cannot enforce payment against them. The platform terms you clicked at fifteen are not an agreement you can sue on either. The withholding clause has no counterweight, because you never had a contract to begin with.

In practice a void contract is won by whoever is holding the money, because doing nothing costs them nothing. That is you on the wrong side, every time.

Can a parent or guardian hold the contract?

Yes, and it is the only way a minor's editing gets paid on an enforceable basis.

For direct clients, a parent or guardian is the contracting party. Their name on the agreement, their bank account for the money, their signature if it ever comes to one. You do the work. The six lines are the same ones in six edits deep and still unpaid, with one change: the person agreeing to them is an adult who can be held to them and can hold the client to them.

Payments from abroad go through the same rails as any export of services, whether that is Payoneer, Wise, PayPal or a direct SWIFT transfer, and the bank issues the FIRC or FIRA for the proceeds. All of that needs an account holder who can open the account. Confirm the specifics with your bank or a CA rather than with a Discord thread.

For platform campaigns the guardian route is narrower, and you need to read the specific terms. Ask one question: do the terms bind the account holder, or the person doing the work? If the rule is that the clipper must be 18, then a parent's account with you cutting the clips is still a minor doing the work, and the balance that gets withheld is your parent's. If you cannot tell which reading applies, assume the stricter one. Do not build a month on the hope that nobody checks.

What you can safely do now

Learn the craft. Nothing in any creator terms stops a fifteen-year-old from opening an editor and cutting a hook, and that is the part of clipping that is worth anything.

Concretely:

1. Clip public long-form content every week and post it on your own account. No brief, no threshold. You are building a reel and learning what holds attention.
2. Keep your ten best in one folder. Replace the weakest every time you make something better. That folder is what you show a client on your eighteenth birthday.
3. Read campaign briefs anyway. Find the minimum threshold and the per-clip cap on every brief you can see. 4. Learn the part AI is not absorbing. Captions and first-pass assembly are being eaten by software. Deciding what to cut and where the hook sits is not. Spend your practice there.

Two things to avoid while you wait.

Do not lie about your age. It puts the withholding clause in play with your name on it, and if you ever need the one appeal, you have already handed them the reason to refuse it.

Do not let someone "run your account" for a cut. Agency cuts on managed pools run 20 to 50 per cent in public payout data, with forum reports up to 80. A minor with no enforceable contract is the ideal person to take a cut from, because there is nobody to complain to. If you want to work through a group, the adult holding the agreement should be someone who would notice if you were not paid.
